Weight Management for Adults

Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in the world.

The rapidly rising overweight and obesity rates in Ireland are indicative of a large proportion of the population consistently expending fewer calories than they consume, leading to a positive energy balance and weight gain.

Obesity is defined as a disease in which excess body fat has accumulated to an extent that health is adversely affected. Obesity occurs when there is an imbalance between energy intake(food) and energy. The overwhelming influences of obesity in 99 per cent of the population are environmental and include marketing, advertising, increasing portion sizes, accessibility and availability of foods and facilities, increased automation and increased car use.

Obesity contributes to high blood pressure, abnormal blood fat levels (affecting LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides), increased blood-clotting tendency and raised blood insulin levels and type two diabetes mellitus.

Weight Management for Teenagers and Children

Childhood obesity is considered a time-bomb for Ireland. One in five Irish children aged 5 to 17 years old is overweight or obese.

There are 300,000 overweight and obese children in the Republic of Ireland with another 10,000 coming obese every year. It means that one in four Irish children is overweight or obese . Irish girls aged 13-15 have some of the highest rates of overweight and obesity in the world. They're life-long struggles with their weight, heart disease and diabetes, which the WHO has targeted as the epidemic of the 21st century. More than 30 per cent of Irish nine-year-old girls are pre-obese and 12 per cent of seven-year-old Irish girls are obese.

As they become adults, they are more susceptible to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes certain types of cancer as well as a range of mental health problems.

There are 300,000 overweight and obese children in Ireland, with another 10,000 becoming obese every year. Some 30 per cent of Irish nine-year-old girls are pre-obese and 12 per cent of seven-year-old girls are obese. Some 75 per cent of parents can't recognise overweight and obesity in their own children.

Across the European Union more than five million school-age children are estimated to be obese and each year nearly half a million more join that number.

According to the International Association for the study of Obesity, nearly one million of these children already show signs of high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and early signs of heart disease.

In school-aged children the lack of adequate physical education provision and a deficiency in school-based emphasis on life-long participation in physical activity is but one factor explaining the decline in exercise patterns of Irish youths. For many overweight and obese adults, poor dietary habits and inactive lifestyles are often laid down in childhood.

Up to 70 per cent of children are not getting the recommended amount of physical activity. Six in ten parents find it a struggle getting their children to eat healthy food. Eighty per cent of parents feel their children do the minimum of one hour of physical activity per day, but kids now spend almost as much time watching TV or surfing the web.
